The Windows registry is a database which stores your OS settings and information on every application that you have installed on your computer. Not only each new program adds something to the registry, most of them leave several entries behind even after you uninstall them. Officially this is for keeping the settings of that program memorized - just in case you'll want to install it again later. It's no wonder the registry grows and becomes cluttered over time - and that can lower the performance of your computer or even cause various system errors.

You will find 7 tips for keeping your computer in a good shape and avoiding those pesky registry problems altogether, rather than trying to fix them after they happen.

1. Uninstall software properly. This can be accomplished by using the Add/Remove option in the Control Panel in WinXP operating system, or Programs option in the Control Panel of Windows Vista. Inexperienced users often try to delete the folder that the application is installed in instead, not realizing that this leaves a lot of registry entries behind.

2. Make sure the software does not leave registry entries after uninstalling. You can use one of the many "registry cleaning" programs to delete these unneeded entries automatically, or you can simply use regedit (Start > Run > regedit) that is included in every version of Windows to remove them manually.

3. Use an antivirus program. A lot of registry errors and computer slowdowns are caused by malicious software (aka malware) such as viruses and spyware.

4. Use a firewall. It will provide additional internet security (internet is the biggest source of malware) and protect you against hackers.

5. Disable the Remote Registry and Remote Assistance services if you're not using them (Start > Run > services.msc) as they can be a potential security risk.

6. Always backup before making any changes to your registry. You can export your registry using the very same regedit tool mentioned in #2 (use File > Export).

7. Use a registry cleaner program regularly. Such software will remove outdated and unneeded registry entries that various software might have left behind. Running a registry cleaner every two weeks is usually more than enough, unless you install new applications very often.

These tips should prevent a lot of computer problems altogether, with the added bonus of making your system more secure.

Use the best registry software to fix registry errors and speed up your computer automatically.
